Sometimes I get the feeling I'm the only person "anal" enough to read the fine print. When I tried to open up a bank account, I read the form I was asked to sign, and I swear the teller seemed utterly offended that I would do such a thing. When she saw me stare at the paper for a few seconds (as opposed to immediately signing it), she began to summarize it. "It just says [I forget what she actually said here]." I nodded and kept reading. Then there was an akward silence in which she began tapping her pen in the desk, looking around, so as not to give the impression that she was staring at me.

The reason I bring this up is that News4Jax has recently done an article on the fine print of scratch and win games. Apparently, even if you win the game on the card, you may not actually get the prize typically associated with that victory. The Lottery Commission actually prints more "winning cards" than there are prizes, with the fine print saying something along the lines of "while supplies last", meaning if someone else nails the prize before you do, you get nothing. "Everyone doesn't play scratch off games for the half a million dollars," a representative for the Commission said. "Our players play for the entertainment and the good products and services we offer." Yeah, right.
