Polar Express Photoshop
[Computer]

Some guy did some Photoshop manipulations of still frame captures from the Polar Express, "improving" them. If you thought the characters from PE were amazing technological feats in human replication, and that we have finally achieved computer graphics that are indistinguishable from live action footage, here's why you're wrong. (I'm thinking of a specific someone when I write this).

I didn't want to see PE because I thought the characters were ugly (and it didn't look good). As already said in the link, 3D real life characters don't look good. You have to actualy make them perfect so people won't notice it's 3D. If they eye seems a little off, it doesn't work. If he doesn't blink at the right time, it doesn't work.

Yeah, they actually have a term for this thing: the "Uncanny Valley". Apparently, people don't mind watching movies with things that look only slightly like humans (e.g. The Incredibles), but some people get really disturbed from viewing things that look almost human, but not quite (e.g. the Polar Express).

The blog mentions "Final Fantasy: Spirits Within" as another victim of the uncanny valley, but I personally though FFSW was quite good. In fact, when I first saw the trailer, I didn't even know that the people I was watching weren't real actors.

BTW, I thought the story in PE was really crappy too. Some people think that's excusable because PE is supposed to be a "Kid's movie", but look at Pixar's stuff (Finding Nemo, for example). Those are "kid's movies" too, and they don't have crappy stories.
