Subtitles
[Anime] 日本語

As promised, here are the English subtitles, along with pseudo director's commentary. Note that I haven't been able to get a correction on the Japanese parts, so don't use this as a guide to learning Japanese.

<Blue skies with a few clouds over urban Japan, with a few electricity poles, a parked bike, and cicadas chirping>

<I went with this intro, 'cause it's the intro for just about every anime that takes place in contemporary Japan.>

Nebu (Narrating): "My name is Nebu. I'm 24 years old. I'm a programmer. Nice to meet you."

<Cut to protagonist in salary-man suit running across blurred background.>

Nebu: "As expected, I'm late again! Sorry!"

<Neb drifts as he turns a corner, as a woman carrying two shopping bags hops out of the way at the last minute. Miscellaneous crowd murmuring and ooh-ing sounds. Then Neb rushes into the office and sits down at the computer.>

Boss: "Neeebuuu!"

Nebu: "Ye...yes?"

<Neb quickly rises from his seat as a Azumanga-Tanizaki-Yukari-look-alike yells at him, slamming a print out onto his desk.>

Boss: "What is this?"

Nebu: "That? Uh... It's the mainfile."

Boss: "Mainfile?! This is shit. Take a look at the BugTracker!"

<She points to the computer screen, where "Bug Tracker" appears near the top. Cut to her finger, pointing at "2 4829 3292 bugs".>

。。万。。。四千。。。

<Note that in Asian locals, they group digits into blocks of 4, in contrast to groups of 3 as is typically down in western locals. A "man" is ten thousand. It's a name for a number, just like a "hundred" is ten tens.>

Nebu: "Two... man... four hundred... Wah! t...two man man <This is like saying "A thousand thousand?" when the proper term is a "million".> bugs?[/p

Boss: "Yes. 2 hundred million."

Nebu: "I'll... have to work late tonight?"

Boss: "Yes."

<Cut to outside. It's dark out, and Neb is leaving his office building.>

Nebu: "Phew... I'm tired. !!!" <I've translated 「あっ。。。!」 as "!!!" because some onomatopeic exclamations don't work as well in English as they do in Japanese.>

<Pan to an arcade.>

Nebu (Narrating): "I like games and anime, but I'm not an otaku. <Japanese equivalent of geek, but much more hardcore.> I find IIDX and Pop'n'Music difficult.

<Neb walks inside where people are doing crazy shit on Pop'n'Music. He walks over to the DDR machine where there's a crowd of people.>

Nebu: "Woah... Five people... Oh well, COIN PUT!"

<Zoom to the lip of the DDR screen where 5 coins are already placed. Neb places another one.>

Nebu: "Any other bemanis?"

<Neb looks around and sees a DrumMania machine and approaches it. No one else is there.>

Nebu: Allright!

<He puts some coins in and presses start, then sits down and hits the snare. The machine doesn't react.>

Nebu: "Huh?"

<He hits the snare harder. Still no reaction. The machine starts to beep. Cut to the top right corner of the screen, where a timer is counting down from 5 seconds.>

Nebu: K-...

<Time runs out, and the song starts: "The Most 180 Seconds" (obviously, due to copyright issues)>

<The hardest song in the DrumMania game is "The Least 100 Sec.". The correct title for "The Most 180 Seconds" is "The Most 180 Sec.", and it's a real song, which doesn't exist on DrumMania, but sounds like it would be equally hard, if not more so.>

Nebu: "Somebody! Help!"

<Alternate between three tight looping animations. Neb is facing the stage-left where he cups his hands around his mouth and noise lines are wiggling out. Neb is facing stage right, and has his left hand cupping his mouth, while his right hand is waving to get attention. Neb is at the stool, hitting the stick obviously too slowly for the given song. After 2 iteration, song fails. Neb sighs and returns to DDR machine, where everyone, and all the coins are gone.>

Nebu: "Oh well! Time to dance!" <I had originally written 「ダンスつくる」 where 「ダンス」 means "dance", and 「つくる」 means "to make", but then changed it to 「ダンスする」 or "dance to do". In retrospect, I probably should have left it as 「ダンスつくる」, as one of the famous lines from DDR is "Let's make a dance!">

<Cut to the lip of the machine where an ghostly outline of Neb's coin.>

Nebu: "Eh? Where's my coin? Argh... this sucks."

<Cut to Neb arriving at the door to his apartment at night. There's a note which he picks up. The camera shows it, and a voice narrates it.>

Forty (Narrating): "Yo big bro, I'm sight seeing in New York and break dancing. My girlfriend doesn't have a house and hotels are expensive... So the thing is... um... Good luck! -Forty"

Kate: "Um..."

Nebu: "Huh?"

<Neb turns around and sees K8>

Kate: "You must be Forty's brother. I'm Kate. Nice to meet you.

Nebu: "N... Nice to meet you!"

Nebu (Narrating): "And so began my underground life."

<Pan up past the roof, and into the night sky. The title logo "隠れ生" appears, and opening music plays.>

<Next episode preview>

<The title of the anime means "Underground Life". The connotation is supposed to be that of hip hop and urban culture. Future characters would have included DJs, ravers, etc.>

Kate (Narrating): "What? You don't know Ann?

Nebu (Narrating): "Nope."

Kate (Narrating): "Ann is the number one B-Girl."

Nebu (Narrating): "Oh..."

Kate (Narrating): "She's coming here."

Nebu (Narrating): "Oh... WHAT?!"

Kate (Narrating): "Here's where she's gonna live."

Nebu (Narrating): "Uh..."

Kate (Narrating): "Here's where sleep~." <The wiggly line is supposed to convey an "ooh la la" type of tone.>

Nebu (Narrating): "Here...?"

Kate (Narrating): "Next episode: Number one B-girl, dancing lessons? Please watch Underground Life!"

This is great! Is it going to be a regular feature? Like an episode a week or something?

Probably not.

The only idea I have for the future plotline is a hot DJ girl of some sort, and she's showing him how to scratch and she accidentally places her hand over his.
