Meiko got pretty emotional over seal hunting, which tends to happen around March from what I've heard. I caught a few glimpses of the power point presentation, and I noticed that it didn't really address the issue of "what can I do, short of donating money?" Well, here's a list of things you can do. Unfortunately, the site is very American-centric. Consider, for example, item number 4, "Don't vacation in Canada". Boycotting Canadian seafood doesn't sound too difficult. The site says to target snow crab in particular, and I don't think I've eaten crab in like a year or something.
Actually, come to think of it, a lot of these items are pretty passive. Rather than a list of things to do, it looks a lot more like a list of things to not do. Better than nothing? More like equivalent to nothing. It does have a sample letter you can print out and sign, and the address of the Canadian Prime Minister, if you want to mail a letter. It also recommends writing to news papers, tourism agencies, and buying their t-shirts. No word if the proceeds from the t-shirt sales goes to a worthy cause. I think the t-shirts are mainly to raise awareness.
I got emotional not about the fact that seals are being killed, but that the hunters are enjoying it and it's becoming sort of an attraction. That's not right.
