Ohio's anti-gay marriage laws facilitates spouse-beating

I'm not a lawyer, but apparently when Ohio banned gay marriage, it also removed the concept of civil unions: that two consenting adults who lived together were allowed to be considered a family (and receive all the benefits that this implies). Because of this, when 42 year old Frederick Burk slapped and pushed his live-in girlfriend over a pack of cigarettes, because they weren't considered a "family", Burk could not be charged with domestic violence.
I don't like America...
