Apparently I'm a Satanist

I took the "Which religion is the right one for you" quiz, and my results are that I'm a Satanist.

You scored as Satanism.

Your beliefs most closely resemble those of Satanism! Before you scream, do a bit of research on it. To be a Satanist, you don't actually have to believe in Satan. Satanism generally focuses upon the spiritual advancement of the self, rather than upon submission to a deity or a set of moral codes. Do some research if you immediately think of the satanic cult stereotype.

So I tried to do some research on Satanism, but what I found only confused me. Of the various kinds of Satanism, most seem to require you to believe in the existence of a being with (what most people would describe as having) "magical" powers, which I don't believe in. Satanism as a philosophy (as opposed to a religion) seems to have something to do with "everyone asks in their self-interest" which does appeal to me, however I couldn't really find enough information to be sure that my philosophical beliefs are congruent with that of a Satanist. And in any case, I think the term "Satanism" carries too much negative connotations for me to want to use it to refer to myself.

The quizz itself isn't too well written, in my opinion. There were many questions which I didn't really understand, and so I stayed with the "neutral" answer. Take for example, "Adam and Eve shared the blame." First of all, shared the blame for what? I can only assume that the quiz is referring to humans getting kicked out of Eden or something, but I'm not that familiar with this mythology, so maybe I'm misinterpreting the question. Further more, is the quiz really asking me what does the bible say about who took the blame? I don't know the answer, 'cause I haven't read this passage of the bible, so I'd have to go with neutral. However, I have a suspicious the quizz means to ask "Should Adam and Eve have shared the blame?" which implies that they didn't (perhaps Eve took most of the blame), and the quiz is asking me if I think Adam should have taken more of the blame. I really don't understand this question.

Another poorly thought out "question" (here, the questions are more like statements with which you say whether or not you agree with the statement) is "God does not ever have a physical, nor human body." This statement seems to pre-suppose that you believe in the existence of God. If someone doesn't, then they don't really have a way to answer this. Consider this conversation: "Do you think God is a giant fluffy pink elephant who likes eating strawberries?" "I don't believe in God." "Okay, but if you did believe in God, do you think he might be a giant fluffy pink elephant who likes eating strawberries?" "I dunno... I guess so..."

Or how about "Abortion is an abominable sin."? In what religion? Some religions define it to be a sin, and some religions don't. That's like asking (in the context of mathematics) whether or not multiplication is commutatitive. In integer arithmatic it is, but in vector arithmatic it isn't. And it's probably a bad idea to rephrase the question as "Is abortion an abominable sin in your religion?" because the whole reason I'm taking this quiz is to find out which religion is right for me. I'm guessing that the author of the quiz intended to ask something like "Do you think abortion is bad?" which is subjective. Whether or not something in a sin in a particular well-defined religion is objective, and there is only one right answer.

And then there's "I'm not sure now, so I guess we'll all figure it out once we die." Not sure about what? Figure out what? And why is it that if I'm not sure about something, this pre-supposes that everyone one else ("we all") are also not sure about whatever that something is?

I do quizzes like these because occasionally they'll ask me question which, when I reflect upon, tell me something more about myself. Take for example "One should not follow any rule or commandmant without full belief and understanding of it." I think it's a good idea to understand something before you believe in it, but what if understanding is far beyond us? For example, I believe in gravity, but I don't understand how it works (does there exist such a particle as a "graviton"? And if so, what experiment can we construct to detect the presence of such particles?) This interpretation is probable not the intent of the quiz, but I find I learn a lot more about myself by thinking about why I answered a question in a particular way than to just read the results at the end (although the results themselves can be entertaining). I compare this to Zen Koan, where the answer given isn't as important as thinking about the question itself.
