Sometimes you've got a harddrive that you want to dispose of. Maybe it contains sensitive data, like your passwords and credit card numbers. Even if you've never manually saved that kind of information to a file, if you've ever typed it in, or viewed a website that had it displayed, or received an e-mail containing that information, it might have been stored in the Windows pagefile (or the Linux swap partition or whatever the Mac equivalent is).

If you want to securely "get rid" of your harddrive, and at the same you want to purchase some windchimes, this guy has posted an online guide on how to disassemble your harddrive and use the components as wind chimes. Even though I'm not that big a fan of wind chimes, this passage caught my eye: "The hard drive platters are shiny round things. [...] They are so shiny that any slight touch from your fingers will ruin their perfection forever and make them really ugly." I like shiny things, so I might try this one day, just to play with the shiny stuff.
